Am I Using POP or IMAP?

The purpose of this document is to show how to determine whether a device is using POP or IMAP to fetch email.

macOS on laptops and computers

  1. Open Mail. Select the word Mail beside the Apple icon in the upper-left of the window.
  2. Select Settings (Ventura), or Preferences (former versions).
  3. Select the Accounts tab. Your accounts will show either POP or IMAP under the account name in the margin on the left.

iOS on iPads and iPhones

  1. Select the Settings icon from the home screen.
  2. Select Accounts.
  3. Select the OlympusNet account.
  4. Select the email address.
  5. The account details will open showing whether it is POP or IMAP. (We recommend using IMAP on portable devices.)

Thunderbird

  1. Open Thunderbird, and select the 3 horizontal lines on the far right top corner of the window.
  2. Select Account Settings.
  3. In the left margin, select Server Settings below the email address.
  4. On the right the Server Type will show POP or IMAP.

Outlook

  1. Open Outlook and select the File menu.
  2. Select Info from the menu.
  3. On the right, hover over Account Settings, and select Account Settings beneath it, (Add and remove accounts …)
  4. In the rectangle under E-mail Accounts it will show either POP or IMAP / SMTP to the right of the email address.
