Outgoing Mail Server Conflicts

If multiple email accounts have been set up, some of them might share an SMTP server. If so, it might be helpful to identify which Incoming Mail Server account is associated with which Outgoing SMTP Server.

  1. Change the Incoming Mail Server (IMAP) Description as shown in Step 2 from Olympus to janedoe IMAP.
  2. Change the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) Description as shown in Step 6 from Olympus to janedoe SMTP.
  3. Note the changes in the windows we’ve been working with.
  4. In the dropdown menus displayed to the right of the Apple logo in the upper left corner of your screen starting with Mail File Edit, select Window, then drop down to Connection Doctor to identify the status of your IMAP and SMTP accounts.

Archive Significant Email to Local On My Mac Mailboxes

We recommend archiving significant email to your laptop or desktop computer in On My Mac mailboxes so that they are under your control and where you can back them up. This is particularly important for IMAP mail because IMAP mail is synchronized between the server and IMAP mailboxes. If mail is deleted from a particular account on the server, it is deleted from all IMAP mailboxes on all devices.

The following image shows two user added On My Mac mailboxes, Family Mail and Tax Records.
