macOS 11 Mail Setup

The purpose of this page is to describe how to set up a new email account to work with OlympusNet email servers.

During the account setup, you’ll be asked to choose between POP and IMAP. The choice matters. We recommend POP for the reasons described at POP or IMAP?

To modify an already existing email account, and also see the other options in Apple Mail, refer to Modify macOS 11 Mail .

  1. Before getting started, have ready the email password agreed upon with OlympusNet staff. You may change this later.
  2. Proceed through the new Mac’s built-in setup sequence which will guide you to the email setup.
  3. For Choose a Mail account provider click Other Mail Account, then click Continue.

  4. Fill in your name as you wish it to appear to others, your email address and your email password, then click Sign In.

On the next dialogue box, Apple Mail doesn’t yet know the correct names of the mail servers so it displays in red the error Unable to verify account name or password. After the server names are entered the Sign In button will become active and you’ll be able to complete the set up shown below.
  5. As long as your email address is complete in the Email Address field, you need not fill in the User Name. Select POP, unless you are familiar with IMAP and prefer to use it. [See link at the top of the document.] Fill in the Incoming and Outgoing Mail Server fields with:
    1. mail.userservices.net for janedoe@olympus.net addresses. The screenshot below shows the entry for olympus.net addresses.
    2. mailc11.megamailservers.com for addresses in your domain, e.g., sally@sallysmith.com

      Add Server Names

  6. Click Sign In.
  7. The account will show Verifying. If an error states that it cannot verify, it is often because there is a typo in the email address, password, or Server Names. Retype the password, if no typos are found in the email address or Server Names.
  8. When Verifying is done without an error message close the Preferences.
  9. Test by sending an email to your own email address which tests both outgoing and incoming server settings. It will take a couple of minutes for the test to come in.
