Setup macOS 10.13 Mail

The purpose of this page is to describe how to set up a new email account for OlympusNet email servers.

During the account setup, you’ll be asked to choose between POP and IMAP. The choice matters. If you’re not clear on the difference, see POP or IMAP?

  1. If this is a first-time setup for a new user, click on the Mail icon in the Dock. The setup wizard should open with the following screenshots. If creating a new mail account for a user who has already set up an email account, click on Mail next to the Apple at the top of the screen, and select Preferences. Select the Accounts icon. Click the + symbol at the bottom of the accounts field in the margin to create a new email account.
  2. Select Other Mail Account…, and click Continue.

  3. In the Add a Mail account window, enter your credentials, then select Sign In. Apple Mail doesn’t yet know the correct names of the mail servers so it will display the error Unable to verify account name or password in the new dialog box that opens. This is expected.

  4. Choose between POP and IMAP for Account Type.
Enter the Incoming and Outgoing Mail Server names, then select Sign In.
    1. OlympusNet email accounts (janedoe@olympus.net) use mail.userservices.net for both Mail Servers.
    2. Domain email accounts (janedoe@example.com) use mailc11.megamailservers.com for both Mail Servers. image of mailServers
  5. The Accounts window opens. If you have more than one OlympusNet email set up, you might want to change the Description field to Olympus-janedoe, to more easily identify your inboxes. If you selected POP above, note the checkbox Remove copy from server after retrieving a message: This is explained in POP or IMAP? under POP Email Left on Server

  6. In the Accounts window, select the Server Settings tab.

    1. For both the Incoming and Outgoing Mail Servers, uncheck, and leave unchecked Automatically manage connection settings. Why? Because doing so uncovers the Port and Authentication settings. For POP, the Port by default is set to 110. OlympusNet servers will work with 110, but we prefer the encrypted port, 995.
    2. POP users, change the Port from 110 to 995.
    3. Confirm that Use TLS/SSL is selected.
    4. Confirm that Authentication is set to Password for both Incoming and Outgoing mail servers. image of accounts-ServerSettings

  7. The best way to test that your email account is working is to send email from yourself to yourself.
