Setup macOS 10.13-10.14 Mail

The purpose of this page is to describe how to set up a new email account for OlympusNet email servers.

During the account setup, you’ll be asked to choose between POP and IMAP. The choice matters. If you’re not clear on the difference, see POP or IMAP? .

To modify an already existing email account, that is, an already existing email address, refer to Modify Email Account - macOS and OS X .

  1. Click on the Mail icon in the Dock. The setup wizard should open with the following screenshots. If creating a new mail account for a user who has already set up an email account, click on Mail next to the Apple at the top of the screen, and select Preferences. Select the Accounts icon. Click the + symbol at the bottom of the accounts field in the margin to create a new email account ie. a new email address.

  2. Select Other Mail Account… and click Continue.

  3. In the Add a Mail account window, enter your credentials, then click Sign In. Apple Mail doesn’t yet know the correct names of the mail servers so it will display the error Unable to verify account name or password< in the new dialog box that opens. This is expected.

  5. The Accounts window opens. If you have more than one OlympusNet email set up, you might want to change the Description field to Olympus-janedoe to more easily identify your inboxes. If you selected POP above, note the checkbox Remove copy from server after retrieving a message: This is explained in POP or IMAP? under POP Email Left on Server.

  6. In the Accounts window, select the Server Settings tab.

    1. For both the Incoming and Outgoing Mail Servers, uncheck and leave unchecked Automatically manage connection settings. Why? Because doing so uncovers the Port and Authentication settings. For POP, the Port by default is set to 110. OlympusNet servers will work with 110, but we prefer the encrypted port 995.
    2. POP users, change the Port from 110 to 995 for Incoming Mail Server.
    3. IMAP users use Port 993 for Incoming Mail Server.
    4. Confirm that Use TLS/SSL is checkedfor both Incoming and Outgoing Mail Servers.
    5. Confirm that Authentication: is set to Password for both Incoming and Outgoing Mail Servers.
    6. Port 587 for Outgoing Mail Server is used for both POP and IMAP setups.

  7. The best way to test that your email account is working is to send an email from yourself to yourself.
